Principal Program Activities
At present, the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere sponsors faculty and graduate student workshops and symposia on critical topics of the day with the support of the Yavitz Fund. In 2009-2010, these activities will expand significantly in number and breadth with the generous support of the Robert and Margaret Rothman Endowment for the Humanities. These funds will also enable the Center to enhance its outreach to members of the larger community.
As the flagship university in this state, the University of Florida is a focal point for the intersection of the humanities and issues of current public concern. The objective of the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere is to assist the University of Florida by
- developing an organizing structure for advancing and promoting (a) disciplinary and interdisciplinary research and outreach in areas of the Humanities, and (b) collaborative research on the cultures of humankind that cross the traditional academic departmental boundaries;
- enhancing the internationalization of the campus coupled with outreach to the community in interdisciplinary fields;
- providing an organizing structure for seeking funding from philanthropic foundations for research, exchange programs, and graduate student studies in cross-disciplinary fields of the humanities; and
- providing a focal point for attracting distinguished visitors, speakers, exchange scholars in fields relevant to UF research areas in the humanities and related fields of fine arts and societal studies.
As in the past, the Center will bring in noted scholars from around the world, foster interdisciplinary undertakings within the Humanities and in cooperation with neighboring disciplines, raise awareness of issues of interest to the broader community, and of course highlight the work of University of Florida’s accomplished faculty and graduate students.
Humanities Center - Past Sponsored Activities
Fine Arts and Humanities Scholarship Enhancement Fund
This fund was established by RGP in 1997 to stimulate new or existing creative/research activity in the humanities and fine arts at the University of Florida. Approximately 40 awards are supported annually. The maximum award request is $10,000, with the average award expected to be less. Eligible applicants are UF ranked faculty working on projects in the humanities or fine arts. The humanities awards process is handled by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The fine arts competition is managed by the College of Fine Arts. Faculty in those areas should contact the appropriate Dean's Office for application information.The deadline for proposals, soon to be announced, will be in November 2009. For more information, see: http://www.clas.ufl.edu/forms/humanities.html.
Please consult the excellent list of funding sources and grant agencies for faculty in the Humanities & Social Science, with thanks to our colleague Dr. Margaret Fields.
Research Opportunity Seed Fund
The Research Opportunity Seed Fund provides funding for new, faculty-initiated research programs that are multi-/interdisciplinary and that have the expectation and a reasonable plan for becoming externally-funded programs at the University of Florida. Projects should be innovative, support institutional mission goals, have strong potential for garnering future funding from external sources, or have outstanding commercial potential. Opportunity Fund awards are not intended to support on-going projects -- they should support new projects (not a supplement to current research) and/or new collaborative partnerships. The deadline will be announced shortly at: www.research.ufl.edu/researchsupport/internal_support.html
Support for Meetings, Workshops and Conferences
Matching support generally up to a maximum of $3,000 is available to assist with the organizational expenses of national meetings sponsored by the University of Florida. In order to qualify for support, the meeting must be widely publicized and open to faculty, students and other UF personnel who would like to attend one or more sessions. There are special guidelines and forms available at: http://www.research.ufl.edu/researchsupport/research_support_docs/meeting.pdf
Applications may be submitted at any time.
